  2. This is the public PGP key of Frans Veldman, developer of the TBAV utilities.

  4. PGP is a high security freeware "public key" cryptographic application,
  5. developed by Philip Zimmermann. When I used PGP, it generated two keys -
  6. the public one you will find below, and another one which is private to
  7. me.  If you're wondering what you can do with my public key, please read
  8. on.

  10. -> Software ENcrypted with one key can only be DEcrypted with the other key.

  12. This means, if you encrypt a file with my public key, I am the only one
  13. who is able to decrypt it.  Now you can safely send me viruses!  If I
  14. provide you an encrypted CRC of all our files, you are able to decrypt
  15. and verify this CRC.  Nobody else is able to encrypt something that you
  16. can decrypt with my public key.  If you are able to decrypt a file with
  17. my key, you may rest assured that the file originated from me.

  19. By using PGP, you (the user) and I (the developer of TBAV) have a secure
  20. method of communicating with each other.  No hacker can interfere, and
  21. you are able to verify that the TBAV files are unmodified, free of
  22. viruses, and originate from my system.  You can also send me viruses,
  23. without the risk that the viruses may spread to the wrong people.

  25. THERE IS ONE RESTRICTION! You need to be ABSOLUTELY SURE that the public
  26. key, listed below, is mine.  Therefore, I strongly recommend that you
  27. obtain this key DIRECTLY from me, or from a highly trusted source.
  28. Since the key will never change, you may want to make just one phone
  29. call to our Bulletin Board System - only once, for safety.  Once you
  30. have a trusted key, you may download your TBAV upgrades from everywhere.
  31. Just check them with my private key, if the key matches, you have the
  32. original copy of TBAV.  Otherwise, you'd better get a more reliable
  33. source...

  39. What do you need to do? You need the PGP program, which is available on
  40. many BBSs, including our Thunderbyte support BBS.  (F'req PGP)

  42. Assuming that you have installed and configured PGP properly, use the
  43. following command and answer the questions:
  44.             PGP -KA VELDMAN.PGP
  45.  
  46. You need to do this only once. (There is no need to separate the key
  47. listed below from this message).

  49. 1)  If we want you to be able to verify that a file originated from us,
  50.     I will supply a PGP signature created with my private key.  (A PGP
  51.     signature is a type of CRC derived from the file, encrypted with
  52.     a private key).  All you need to do is to invoke the command below:
  53.             PGP <FILENAME>
  54.  
  55.     For instance, we will put an Anti-Vir.Dat file in the TBAV archive,
  56.     and a text file SECURITY.DOC which contains the PGP signature.
  57.     If you download the TBAV archive, first check with PGP whether this
  58.     Anti-Vir.Dat file is original:
  59.             PGP SECURITY.DOC

  61.     PGP will now ask the name of the file to which SECURITY.DOC belongs.
  62.     Type:
  63.             ANTI-VIR.DAT
  64.  
  65.     PGP will now tell you whether this ANTI-VIR.DAT file was created by
  66.     me and unmodified.  If it has found to be reliable, you can now use
  67.     TbScan to find out if the TBAV utilities do match the ANTI-VIR.DAT
  68.     records. If this is also true, you are sure you have the original
  69.     TBAV files!

  71. 2)  If you want to send us an encrypted file, invoke the command below:
  72.             PGP -E <FILENAME> "Frans Veldman"

  74.     PGP will create a file with the same name as the original file, but
  75.     with the extension '.PGP'.  You can safely send me that file, I'm
  76.     the only one who is able to decrypt it.
